The Swan River stretches 72 kilometres from Perth's Barrack Street Jetty to the Indian Ocean, carving through Western Australia's oldest wine region along its middle reaches. Captain James Stirling sailed these waters in 1827, naming the waterway for the black swans that still cluster near the banks. By the 1830s, settlers had planted vines in the alluvial soils of the upper valley, establishing vineyards that predate the famous Margaret River district by more than a century. Today the river cruise Perth to Swan Valley route follows the same navigable channel Stirling charted, passing beneath four road bridges and the twin pylons of Guildford Railway Bridge before reaching the valley's tasting-room strip. Houghton Estate, founded in 1836, anchors the western end; Sandalford, operating since 1840, occupies river frontage to the north. Both estates lie within walking distance of Guildford's public jetty, the traditional disembarkation point for river passengers. Contemporary cruise itineraries pair the upstream voyage with winery transfers, chocolate tasteries, and return-trip options via coach or downstream sail. The river's navigability depends on summer water levels and winter rainfall. During dry years, vessels draw no more than 1.2 metres to clear the Guildford shallows. Spring months bring wildflowers to the riverbanks; autumn sees vintage activity in the vineyards. Black swans, pelicans, and cormorants occupy the sandbars year-round, untroubled by passing traffic.
